What this is

MimOS is a Linux distribution based on Arch, published free of charge by David Fontanet Bujaldón and Jan Arrillaga Ferrer under the team name XI14. These terms govern downloading and using the system, this website and the update channel.

By downloading or using MimOS you accept them. If you do not agree, do not download it.

What you take on by installing it

The current release is 1.0, the first stable one. That changes what we promise, not what can go wrong when you install an operating system:

  • The installer writes to the disk you choose and erases what was there. A wrong choice destroys data, and no release fixes that.
  • Back your data up before installing. MimOS can undo its own changes — every package transaction leaves a snapshot and the boot menu offers the previous state — but that protects the system, not whatever was on the disk before you installed it.
  • The hardware that has been tested is ours. MimOS is installed and in daily use on machines with Intel, AMD and NVIDIA graphics, and they are XI14’s own machines: variety of graphics, not a compatibility lab. On an unusual computer, boot the Live session from the USB first — it does not touch the disk.
  • Known issues are published with every release and are worth reading: that is where we say what has not been tested.

No warranty

MimOS is provided “as is”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including without limitation the warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We do not warrant that it will work, that it is free of defects, that it is secure, or that it will be available.

This is what the MIT licence covering our code already says, written somewhere it can be read.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, we are not liable for any damage arising from the use of, or inability to use, MimOS, including loss of data, loss of profits, business interruption or damage to equipment.

Because the software is supplied free of charge and without consideration, this limitation is an essential condition of making it available.

Nothing here excludes liability for wilful misconduct or gross negligence, nor any consumer rights that apply mandatorily.

Payments, Patreon and refunds

The website, download and use of MimOS are free. There is no basket, subscription or direct XI14 charge on this site. The support link opens Patreon, an external platform that displays and processes contributions there; XI14 does not receive full card details.

The payments and refunds policy explains how to cancel a future contribution or ask us to review a Patreon charge. Nothing here limits mandatory consumer rights.

No support and no availability commitment

There is no obligation to provide support, fix defects, answer questions or keep any release published. Help offered through community channels is voluntary.

Downloads and the update channel may become unavailable at any time, without notice.

Software licences

What we write ourselves is under the MIT licence. You may use, copy, modify and redistribute it, including commercially, keeping the copyright notice.

The distributable image also contains third-party software — around a thousand packages from the official Arch Linux repositories, among them the Linux kernel, KDE Plasma and the Calamares installer. That software keeps its own licences, many of them GPL, and our MIT licence does not apply to it. Every installed package declares its own, viewable with pacman -Qi <package>.

Source for GPL software. The GPL components we redistribute are taken unmodified from the official Arch Linux repositories, and their source is publicly available from Arch’s infrastructure. For the packages we do modify — today, the Calamares installer, which carries our patches — we publish the complete build recipes and patches in our repository. If you need the source corresponding to a specific image and cannot obtain it through those routes, write to us and we will provide it.

Trademarks and identity

The MIT licence covers the code, not the brand. The names MimOS, MIMI and XI14, the MIMI character, the logos, the brand typography and the project’s visual system are not licensed alongside the code.

  • You may name MimOS, write about it, link to it, review it, and use its logos to identify it when discussing it.
  • You may not use those names or marks to identify a derivative or modified distribution, or in any way suggesting that someone else’s work comes from us or is endorsed by us.

You may create a derivative distribution — the MIT licence allows it — but it must carry a different name.

Using the download server

Images are served from iso.mimoslinux.org. You may download them, verify them and mirror them; we welcome mirrors and they help the project.

What we ask is that it not be used in ways that degrade the service for others: no repeated automated downloading without need, and no hotlinking the file from another site as though it were your own storage. We may restrict access that harms availability.

Verify what you download

Every image is published alongside its SHA-256 sum, and the packages in the update channel are signed with the MimOS key.

Check the sum before writing the image to a USB stick. If it does not match, do not use it: the file is either corrupt or not ours. We are not responsible for images obtained from anywhere other than the official channels.

Changes to these terms

We may change them. The version in force is always the one published on this site, with its date. A change does not apply retroactively to what you already downloaded.

Governing law

These terms are governed by Spanish law, without prejudice to the mandatory rights available to consumers under the law of their country of residence in the European Union.
